The Alexandria Archaeology Museum is located in the Torpedo Factory Art Center on the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria, near many shops, restaurants, and other museums and historic sites. Metered parking is available on Union Street, with two or three hour parking on nearby residential streets. Parking regulations are strictly enforced. Several garages are in the area.

Alexandria Archaeology Museum

Visit the Alexandria Archaeology Museum to learn how the City’s archaeologists, volunteers and students work with residents and developers to study and manage archaeological resources important to the community's past.

The museum is located on the third floor of the Torpedo Factory Art Center.

Free

School, Camp, and Out-of-School-Time Programs

Each program introduces the process of archaeology and then asks participants to apply those new skills and knowledge on a specific archaeology site in the city. Participants use real tools, research, and artifacts to better understand Alexandria’s past. For more information about visiting multiple sites in Alexandria, visit Scheduling an Education Program with Historic Alexandria.

  • Reservations are required.
  • Length of program: Each program is 45 minutes long.
  • Maximum Group Size per program: 20 students. (Larger groups should consider scheduling a multi-site program.)
  • Cost: $3 per student payment due upon arrival with a minimum charge of $40 per tour day. Alexandria City Public Schools admitted free of charge.
  • Accessibility: Please notify us of any special needs in advance so we can best accommodate all of your students. The museum has handicap access to the third floor and will work closely with visiting teachers to make the program as accessible as possible to all.

Adult Programs

Small groups may visit Alexandria Archaeology free of charge. Scheduled talks and tours led by staff members are offered by reservation at the rate of $5 per person. 

Homeschool Programs

The Office of Historic Alexandria offers monthly homeschool classes that rotate around the various City sites. These 1.5 hour classes always include primary source materials and hands-on activities appropriate for a variety of ages. Check the Historic Alexandria Calendar for the upcoming classes. Groups are also welcome to schedule a school tour or book a private homeschool class. Contact the Curator of Education to arrange a visit.

Museum Shop

At the Museum, you can purchase gifts and a variety of publications on archaeology in Alexandria. Some of these products and additional Historic Alexandria merchandise are available online from The Alexandria Shop.
