These companies are subject to specific requirements in the City Code and the permit to ensure these devices are managed appropriately and operated safely.

DOT Paratransit Program

Guaranteed Ride Home

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) manages the Guaranteed Ride home program, which offers a free and reliable ride home when one of life's unexpected emergencies arise. If you rideshare, bicycle, walk or take public transportation to work at least twice a week, you qualify for a free emergency ride home up to 4 times annually. Providers are on call Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. to make sure you get home when you need to.

Disability Parking on Residential Streets

Persons with disabilities may request signage for a disability parking space on the public street in front of their home. This is not reserved for the exclusive use of the resident who requests it but may only be used by vehicles with a DMV disabled license plate or placard.

Transportation Management Plans

A Transportation Management Plan, or TMP, is a site-specific plan of strategies to encourage residents and employees to take public transportation, walk, bike or share a ride, as opposed to driving alone. TMPs are a requirement of new development as outlined in the Zoning Ordinance. A TMP fund is established to finance the transportation strategies to encourage people to use modes other than the single occupancy vehicle.

Taxicabs

The City regulates taxicabs operating in the city. Meter rates charged by taxicabs are set by the City Council. All taxicabs and taxicab drivers must be licensed by the City.
